World Mental Health Day

October 10th, 2022 is World Mental Health Day. Each year has a theme and this year’s theme is “Make mental health & well-being for all a global priority”.

World Mental Health Day is a collaboration of several organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH).

The goal of, ‘Make mental health & well-being for all a global priority,” is to provide organizations the opportunity to re-kindle mental health efforts, discuss the progress that has been made, and more importantly, discuss the next steps to ensure mental health for everyone, everywhere is made a priority.

Mental Health well-being needs to be normalized both in the home and in the workplace. It starts by sharing resources, information and practicing good mental health.

Here are 5 quick and easy ways you can practice good mental health both at home, and in the workplace.

  1. Take care of your body.
    • Eating health gives you the nutrients you need to be at your best physically and emotionally. Get a full night of sleep. Poor eating habits and sleep deprivation can lead to a lethargic body and mind and eventually cause depression.
  2. Mindfulness.
    • Try meditation, or mindfulness to quiet the mind. Actively sit and try to stop your mind from running non-stop. Try to get the mind to focus on your breathing and not an endless list of to-dos.
  3. Connect with people.
    • Make a point to hang out with the people who make you happy. Dedicate time to meet with friends/collogues/family. Sharing a connection with a person can boost positive feelings while warding off depression and anxiety.
  4. Exercise.
    • You don’t have to get ready to run a marathon to see the benefits in exercising on your mental health. Take a 15 min walk, do some simple stretches while you watch tv, or get creative with some goat yoga. Even a small bit of exercise will get your endorphins going and help improve your mood and avoid depression.
  5. Set Small Goals.
    • You can’t fix everything at once. And you can’t tackle everything on this list at once. Pick one item you can try to focus on at a time over a short period of time. Don’t try everything at once, it will be too overwhelming.

If you’re wanting to play a larger role in World Mental Health Day, check out the events that are happening around the globe. Use the hashtags and campaign information provided by the WHO. Create an event in your community or in your organization like the ones shared on the WFMH site.
